Taormina is located in a wonderful position as a balcony on the sea and in front of the Etna. It lays on a rocky plateau at 200 m of altitude.
Especially chosen as a travel destination since the eighteenth century, Taormina experienced a further tourist development from the last thirty years of the XIX century until when it became famous all over the world for the mildness of its climate, the beauty of its landscape, and the several artistic beauties it hosts.
Along corso Umberto is also located Piazza IX April, Taormina’s great salon with its open air bars and a viewpoint embracing a dream’s landscape.
But the highest beauties are to be found in the origins of this important tourist center, and connected to the Greek civilization. In 358 B.C. the arrival of Greek refugees to the nearby city of Naxos slowly starter the urbanistic development of this area. In fact, the Greek named "Tauromenion" the hill rising on the sea behind Naxos. The building which is considered Taormina’s symbol, the famous Ancient Greek Theater, built exploiting the morphological structure of the hil where it lays, dates back to the third century B. C. An enchanting landscape frames the theater’s scene as a natural curtain, including the fascinating bay of Schisò and the Volcano Etna.
Compared with the Ancient Theater, the Odeon is remarkably smaller, it container not more than 200 people and was reserved to the most important public. Built in the Roman Age, it was uncovered by chance on the 5th of June 1982. It is located closet to Palazzo Corvaja, along Corso Umberto. Another of the most important examples of the Roman monuments in the island is the monument of the Naumachie, a façade from the Imperial Age, longer than one hundred meters. A place for shows where in an artificial water basin the “naval battles” took place.
The walk along the streets of Tarmina will take you to Piazza del Duomo, where a beautiful Baroque fountain built in Taormina’s stone rises, and above which the symbol of the city is placed, the centaur. Here there is also the Fortress-Cathedral, Taormina’s Cathedral, a small Medieval church dedicated to Saint Nicholas from Bari, whose main portal is decorated with a large carved rose window inspired by the Renaissance.
Flowers and plants in great variety characterize the landscape of the whole city, but of speial interest are the gardens of Villa Comunale, with exotic specimens extremely beautiful.

On Piazza della Badia you will find Palazzo Corvaja, the most relevant Medieval palace of the city, which takes its name after the Corvaja family, one of the most ancient and noble families in Taormina, owed it between 1538 and 1945.
Other palaces of remarkable interest are the Palace of the Duke of Saint Stephan, masterpiece of Sicilian Gothic art influenced by the Arabic-Norman experience in its decorations, The San Domenico Palace, ex convent of the Dominicans, today the San Domenico Palace Hotel, one of the most famous hotels in Italy, which was the third palace-castle and the third monastery built in Taormina.
The Clock Tower represents the access to the part of the city which is defined fifteenth-century village. Dating back to the twelfth century, was completely destroyed in 1676 during the French invasion. The tower which can still be seen today is a reconstruction wanted by the Taorminese people, who in that occasion also placed the clock after which it is named.
Moreover, the numerous churches, like the church of Saint Josef in clear Baroque style, and the church of Saint Cathrine, are especially interesting.
Finally, Castelmola is another place especially interesting, a little village located on top of Mount Tauro, where a Castle rises on a cliff. The castle is the higher point from which it is possible to admire natural landscapes of infinite beauty.
